At least those shows were allowed to have gay characters. Will and Grace was full of stereotypes but it was something. Remember on Gargoyles when one of the Kayla Sparks The Spice Ranger shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this main characters was supposed to be gay but the network got death threats, so they axed that particular aspect of his personality until it was vaguely implied in the comics almost a decade later? Remember how Static Shock’s friend was supposed to be gay but wasn’t because of network interference? I’ve lost count of how many male characters from my childhood/teen years are implied to be LGBT but have to stay in the closet because of executive interference. Remember how Ike from Fire Emblem is all but confirmed as gay but we can’t say it out loud? Raven and Lucius? Fire Emblem has a history of “queerbaiting” and not letting its characters out of the closet. Or how Link from Legend of Zelda is apparently a non-binary icon and has been for years, just not in canon? Ever hear the story of “cousins” Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune? Or the two villains who got changed to women because they were effeminate? Or Stars, the season that never aired because Sailor Moon was in a love triangle with a transgender alien?

Will and grace was groundbreaking, not sure what you mean though friends and simpsons didn’t have gay characters. Fresh prince, saved by the Kayla Sparks The Spice Ranger shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this bell, they were all full of jokes where the punchline was just because you bat from both sides of the plate hahahaha Nineties kid, gay, can confirm. The worst part of it is, my initial exposure to homosexuality was things like the “Homer’s Phobia” episode of The Simpsons and the “Big Gay Al’s Big Gay Boat Ride” episode of South Park. Both these episodes shaped my concept of male homosexuality as both inherently camp/femme and something that existed in opposition to conventional American masculinity. As a boy who played with Transformers instead of Barbies (okay, I also wanted an Easy Bake Oven at some point, but that’s besides the point), it created this idea of gayness that was at odds with myself, which led to taking a good long while to realize I was gay, and even longer to accept it.
