My son is using a 10 year old mid-range MacBook for school and it connects to an HDMI monitor and lets him play a ton of games too. Stock battery still goes 3-4 days on a single charge with moderate to heavier use (blocked all the phone home which tripled its battery life). Updates are blocked, apps are locked down, auto-updates are uninstalled and disabled. I even bought a spare, just in case this one dies and I need to mirror and replace it. It’s a tank, and I have zero reason to jump to a newer device. They already are. People just don’t want to wait to upgrade. Will companies only release a new phone every 5 years to facilitate this? Not a chance. Then they risk people switching to other phones that come out with better specs and designs in the middle of that 5 year wait time. Got my iPhone 11 Pro at launch (sept 2019) and it’s still like new. Small chip in the back glass and battery capacity is getting close to needing a battery replacement. I don’t mind paying for that £70 and my phone will be like new again. I could get 6-7 out of this phone wasy I could have used my Galaxy S8 for a few more years (that already had 5 years) if I didn’t live in a shithole country where people steal your phones I left google because they dropped support too early. I have an iPhone 8+ now I am going to milk this thing for another 2-3 years.

I have an iPhone X that I purchased in 2018 – thing still works like a charm. People need to take better care of their phones The software updates of iPhones is one reason i want to switch from Android. Currently there’s no android brand that supports 5 year OS updates. I would easily use my phones >5 years but the I’m sorry you’re straight shirt in other words I will buy this batteries always blow up before that. Self destruct > planned obsolescence! Typing this on a 7 year old phone. It’s surprising that so many people do not expect a phone to last that long. As someone who works with both android and Apple devices for work, I can tell you that most android batteries, especially google devices, the batteries are cheap and are always the first to fail. iPhones have been the whole time. Especially if you just replace the batter after 2-3 years. Batteries have always been consumables Planned obsolescence is a clear distortion generated by capitalism and, given the amount of waste and pollution it generates, an ultimately suicidal one. I don’t know about android phones, but my iPhones has always held up great until I upgraded my phone because I wanted to, not because I had to.
