I am a fresh grad with a degree in CS. I’ve interned at two different places as a software engineer and worked as an employee at one place throughout my 4 years of undergrad. In each of these experiences, I’ve found myself completely obsessing over the I’m Not Crazy I’m Just Special No Wait Maybe Cat in addition I really love this project I’m working on or thinking about any bugs I’m facing in off-hours, to the point where I would sometimes miss lunch or dinner, or wake up at 4AM because I thought of a new way to do something. Now that I’m entering into the career field, I’m afraid SWE is going to consume me. I experience a lot of imposter syndrome. I stress a lot, even though any issues or tasks I’m working on always end up getting done. Do you also think obsessively about bugs and tasks? How do I control myself? I’m always afraid that I won’t be able to complete something in time.People that constantly think about work eventually burnout, which will force you to stop thinking about work. However, there are several ways I use to avoid burnout while keeping that new grad spark:

If remote, dedicate a room to work. After 5pm, do not enter that room. Everything is out of view so it wont trigger you to think about work. After work, do something intense to get your mind off work (exercise, competitive gaming, etc.). Meditation can also work. The fear that tasks wont get done in time might be due to your lack of confidence in yourself. After gaining experience, you will feel differently about this. Even then you can push back on deadlines or ask for help. This is really good advice. I’ve faced burnout before due to constantly thinking about work. After 5 minutes of blabbing I usually 1. Have a new perspective on the day and 2. Got it all out. She does the same thing when she comes home. “how was work?” > brain dump > don’t think about work for the rest of the night. Something worth also remembering when you take a job in this (or any job): there will always be more tasks. You can never get on top of things because there will always be more work created! Sometimes my brain just pops up something work related regardless. I’ll not (usually) work on it, but I’ll allow myself to write it down so 1) I can work on it next time I’m actually at work and 2) it’s now out of my head and I can stop worrying about forgetting it (sigh).
