If my kid didn’t want what we were having, he was free to make himself a PB&J sandwich. He had to clean up after and of course, no dessert. Kids have so little control over anything in their lives, we felt as long as he ate something, that was enough. He grew up to be a big strapping man so I guess it worked out okay. Similar here, I made sure my kids knew it was ok to say they didn’t like something, but they had to at least try a couple bites and talk about why they didn’t like it. It makes a huge difference when our kids can articulate why they don’t want to eat something. For an autistic kid, it did wonders, and I’m so stoked she managed to figure that one out in what was really a different time for people like me.
