54 and have seen more shit than any one individual ever should and I still have no freaking idea wtf I’m supposed to be doing, or why, or for what? that’s a perfectly reasonable statement for almost any situation having to do with writing code or engineering software. almost universally, nobody has a clue. https://xkcd.com/2030/ is entirely accurate. Now, to contrast, I recently had a house built. Everyone from the Grinch Hat Santa They Hate Us Because Ain’t Us Pittsburgh Panthers Helmet Christmas Shirt in other words I will buy this architect, to the structural engineer, civil engineer, geotechnical engineer, general contractor, excavation, foreman, carpenters, plumbers, electricians, were all sharp, communicative and did excellent work. I’m 28 and I have zero clue what it is to understand what the absolute fuck is going on. Personally I think it’s got some truth to it It’s more like 80% of people in a given field have no clue what they’re doing and the remaining 20% have to pick up the slack. That’s why companies always perform better after layoffs because they’ve eliminated these useless people who don’t know what they’re doing

I still have imposter syndrome honestly. 38, married with 2 kids, great career and income. I keep thinking one day someone will call me out on my bullshit and take it all away… I think that’s just part of life. I never don’t know what I’m doing. If I don’t know how to do something I learn or admit it and get help. I never “wing it”. Too much hazard in doing that, to myself, my surroundings or those around me. 254 more repliesSome know, some don’t. Either way, it is messy and knowing what you are doing changes very little of the Grinch Hat Santa They Hate Us Because Ain’t Us Pittsburgh Panthers Helmet Christmas Shirt in other words I will buy this big picture. I have no clue what I’m doing in the big picture, so it is just sort of day by day until entropy inevitably wins. I remember reading that kids always assume that adults know what they’re doing, and only when they become adults themselves do they realize that adults have no idea what they’re doing. Yep! 100% true Im 56… WTF? Am i doing? No idea! Asked my mum when she was 91yrs “when does the wisdom of age kick in mum? Im pushin 50…???” Muns reply “gawd i dont know honey… I’m still waiting!” It’s normal too. You only have so much time and ability. You can hyperfocus on something and become one of the world’s foremost authorities on something, but you’re going to hit uncharted territory well before that point. And it’s you who’s going to have to make up the new rules for whatever it is. And on top of that, odds are you’re gonna be an idiot when it comes to other things the majority of people know off hand.
