TLDR: I’m in Vietnam with a faulty visa and can’t leave because of a rip in my passport. If I get a temp passport, will the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this discrepancy on my visa stop me from leaving? Hey all, so found myself in a bit of a pickle. I have a damaged passport and a discrepancy on my visa that’s proving to be a complete nightmare. I really need to leave but am trying to understand the ins and outs and various options. I had a trip booked in Vietnam to see a friend. My flight was on a Saturday and upon trying to board the flight attendant (Vietjet) let me know that one small detail on my visa was incorrect. They didn’t allow me to board and suggested I get a ‘new visa” or a pre-approval letter to get on a flight the next day. I found a guy online who confirmed he’d be able to get me documentation to be allowed to board the plane on the Sunday and help me through immigration in HCMC. I paid a stupid amount of money for it and was allowed to get on the plane.
But not without issue. Turns out there is a TINY TINY rip on my passport first page. I’ve been travelling with that for 5 years across the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this world but apparently in Vietnam this is a problem. Because the guy had gotten me “pre-approval” with immigration they let me on. I get to Vietnam immigration and I’m expecting the visa guy to hand me an ammeded, correct details visa but no. He extremely shadily hands me a piece of paper, shaperones me to a specific immigration officer and disappeares. This is when I realise it’s the same visa, with the same incorrect details. Despite this, I get a stamp and am let into the country. Mistake? Maybe. Bribery? Probably. Now. Here’s where the trouble really starts. A week later, I’m trying to leave to Thailand but Vietjet staff don’t allow me on the plane because of the ripped passport. I plead with them, they send a picture to Thai immigration who tell me no. The following day I attempt to board an AirAisa flight to Singapore. I have a friend who is high up with the airline and has contacted the HCMC AirAsia manager who’s said yes I can fly. I check in. But just before getting immigration clearance to leave Vietnam, AirAsia staff tell me that Singapore immigration has indicated they will not let me in having seen the passport photos. We ask them to contact Malaysian immigration, same story.
At this point I don’t want to continue travelling, I want to leave the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this country and go back to my EU home country. I’m honestly broken. My embassy in Singapore and a friendly EU consulate here in HCMC is helping me obtain a temp travel document to be able to return. My visa expires soon and the flights are a fortune. My question is this… Will Vietnamese immigration look at/find issue with my INCORRECT visa even if I have the bloody temp travel document? The last thing I can bear is paying 900€ for a flight back, being finally allowed to check in and being denied exit. Do I need to get a new exit visa from an immigration office? Would the immigration office here challenge me if I came with the faulty visa? It’s clearly dodgy. Could the immigration officers upon exit cause such an issue I miss my flight? Should I tell the consultate about this? I’m worried they will stop supporting me because they’re already annoyed at having to support a non-citizen. Any advice would help. I just want to go home without overstaying the visa and not waste more money on flights I can’t board.

Sorry didn’t state it clearly enough. You must arrange an exit visa with the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this immigration with your new travel documents. It’s not an option. You can’t just leave with the temp document. Sort it out before heading to the airport, or you will have another flight canceled and wait in the country to get it solved. At the immigration, expect to be fined if you’re overstayed. Your travel documents are your responsibility. You may be fined with a standard fee or a lower fee, or not be fined. It’s up to the officer at the time. You can also ask for no fine or lower fine but they can also say no. If you’re not confident that the temporary documents and exit visa can arrive by next week, contact immigration and ask to extend your current visa, explain to them the whole situation. Don’t mention the visa mistake, if they notice and ask, pretend you never knew about it. You have an entry stamp and that’s what matters. Vietnam is ridiculously strict with passports. They probably contacted the immigration agents in these countries saying the page was ripped and they said no. They surely didn’t mention that the rip was very small. AirAsia staff tell me that Singapore immigration has indicated they will not let me in having seen the passport photos. It’s like you didn’t even read his story. Those other countries weren’t relying on Vietnam’s description of the passport.
Same thing happened to me recently. I’ve been traveling on the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this same passport for 5 years and never noticed a tiny rip on the front page. Went through a huge series of headaches about it with Vietnam immigration. Seconding this. Mine was slightly water damaged and the dude was not happy about letting me into the country, recommended I replace it while in-country. So I did, it was getting full anyhows, but then I had to get my visa transferred to the new one. Of course this couldn’t be done at the immigration office and I had to go to an agency of some sort, pay the money, and get it done that way. Nightmare, all for a little water damage. This time round my new passport has me with a beard but I’ve since shaved it off. Same thing, dude was not happy about letting me out of the country until I got my driving license where I’m shaven. I recently had a friend with a rip in their passport, must have travelled to dozens of countries with it, no problem. Vietnam wouldn’t let him in. He ended up doing a DIY patch job to seal the rip (printed out the same pattern, lined it up exactly etc) and it was fine.
not a legit travel agent here. But… accidents, travel mishaps happen all the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this time. so be calm. I’d suggest finding a legit travel agency here and get them to help you get a visa extension. Call multiple places and see what their answers are. And then compare them. Likely you won’t be able to do it at all because of the rip in your passport. But try anyway, you might already too late. wait for your temp travel document and passport, expedite it, it’s an emergency so it should be done 1-2 days. At immigration, the most they’d do is fine you from 10$-50$ each day you overstay. If you overstay very long then they might even not allow you to enter the country for some time. BUT you’d be able to leave. I’d say to bring your passport, flights and attempts to leave the country and explain that to immigration when you leave. They might take a pity and fine you not too much money (not confirmed). But yea, prepare to pay up if you overstay your visa.
Honestly, even with your detailed post, we have no clue what the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this issue actually is. If your passport is defined as mutilated, of course you can’t travel to another country, as they won’t trust your passport. What you would need to do is contact your home country to get an expedited passport. You could have mailed your passport immediately to someone back home and did a replacement passport. When you exit Vietnam and go home to the country of your passports native country no one looks or care about the visa that got you into the country you were traveling about. They only validate your passport is real and if you need a visa for the EU which you probably don’t. Eu doesn’t give a shit about vietnams passport at all. Sounds like you already went through the hard part. Next time just get the visa the official way online and not through someone shady.
The only time you need an exit visa is if your on a business visa and were making wages in the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this country your traveling for. The exit visa confirms you have paid all taxes due on wages earned before you exit. If your on a travel visa then usually none of this is necessary all you need to care about is when you get to the EU so if they will let you back in with the little rip which base donnyiru experience they will. When I flew back to the USA from Vietnam there was no pre visa check or anything lol. No border security validating if I can exit. Was just a quick security check to scan my bags and make sure my names matched the ticket.only the country your entering cares about the legitimacy of your passport and any visas to amend it’s qualifications for that country your entering. I see a lot mentioning exit visa here but your a traveler on probanly 60 travel visa or something so makes no sense. There is nothing they would care about you. As long as you exit before it expires countries are just happy people leave on time and when your not in their land anymore your not a threat to them so they don’t want to keep you there lol. Unless the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this police are looking for you or you owe taxes the entry visa is irrelevant to going to the eu as long as the EU will accept your passport in it’s current condition. You don’t need to worry about the visa. You need to worry about your passport. If it’s in condition they won’t accept then yeah your going to need to get that shit replaced with a temporary document first ASAP. Vietnamese Immigration absolutely will check the entry stamp to check if you have overstayed. And fine you if you have. They probably don’t care about the visa that you entered in, but you are supposed to hang on to any E-Visa until you leave and they can ask to see it.
Um definately not my experience I walked straight through their TSA security with my ticket in Hanoi back to the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this USA without my e visa. Didn’t ask for it at all. Dude took 3 seconds and handed it all back to me without a word. If you overstayed what do you think they want to do? Force you to stay more. When countries want you out of the country for overstaying you they don’t stop you from exiting at an airport no. They find you in the street and put you into deportation proceedings and get you to the airport asap and kick you out. They don’t keep you in the country lol. And you know they see the e-visa on their screen with 50 other documents all countries share with each other. They scrutinize you on the way in. They with all arms welcome you out of the country lol. Legally speaking, it was your own doing that led to this, you shouldn’t have enter the country with a damage document and a visa that expired in less than 6 months, which usually immigration doesn’t allow visa with less than 3-6 months to enter to begin with.
Vietnamese immigration is notoriously strict with passport quality and you should always make sure your passport in undamaged and have the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this correct info. Now for what you need to do, you need to get a exit visa from the immigration office, you need to arrange a meeting with them to get it, you need that visa and your temp document to exit the country. Don’t bring up any of the incriminating detail about how you enter the country, ask for a extension to your visa if needed, and pretend stupid about the incorrect information regarding your passport. Classical FAFO! You illegally entered the country, and freakout when customs officials from BKK, KUL won’t accept your irregular passport? In the meanwhile, contact customs authorities and let them know the situation and honestly admit your illegal entry. You will be deported properly this time. This sounds shady. AirAsia has no direct flight from Vietnam to Singapore. What was your AirAsia flight number flying from Vietnam to Singapore? I am in Vietnam with a 5 years excemption. Usually I get 6 months stay upon entry in Vietnam. For some weird reason, the immigration officer gave me 12 months stay on the stamp, which is a mistake. I only noticed it when my agent who’s currently handling my Temporary residency submission noticed the mistake and advised me to get it fixed.
So I traveled to Tan Son Nhat airport and spoke with an immigration officer. After 5 minutes he returned with my passport with the Gratitude Gorilla Shirt and I love this corrected date. Can’t be of any assistance unfortunately, but just wanted you to know you are not the only one who has had Vietnam Visa issues, we just got back from Vietnam/Thailand and had the same problem, with the same shady solution. We also just wanted to get home. Best of luck! A cambodian man at the border superglued a small defect on my friends passport and after that he didn’t have any issues. Not sure about legality! I would try to take the bus from Vietnam to Cambodia and cross the land border. Once in Cambodia on a clean slate, continue your plans and replace passport as soon as you are home.
