India is currently experiencing a sweep of lockdowns as a second wave of COVID-19 affects the Ghostbusters DESTRUCTOR T-Shirt and by the same token and country. Many hospitals are continuing to hit their capacities and are experiencing shortages of critical materials like oxygen tanks and PPE. In the face of the crisis, there are many resources and ways to help India right now, including a new print sale from Hope4India. One-hundred percent of proceeds from this art-focused project will go towards COVID-19 relief in the country. Launched yesterday, the print sale is run by Citta, a nonprofit organization that is raising funds to purchase and distribute oxygen tanks, PPE supplies, and more to both urban and rural communities in India. To do so, Citta plans to work with four Indian organizations, including the Save Life Foundation, Give India Foundation, AAPI for Medical Oxygen to India, and Zomato Feeding India. The nonprofit’s founder Michael Daube joined forces with filmmaker Shruti Ganguly and Paper editor Mickey Boardman to bring the fundraiser to fruition.American and Southeast Asian artists donated prints for the sale, including David Byrne, Cass Bird, Jack Pierson, Paige Powell, Riddhibrata Burman, Sumaiya Sayed, and more. Each of the donated prints are unframed, sized at 8.5 by 11 inches, and cost $150. All of the images celebrate facets of Indian culture and represent hope in some way—whether it’s striking portraits of individuals or scenic landscape shots taken in the country. A photograph from Susan Meiselas, for instance, depicts a woman waiting outside of a delivery room in Dewa, India, wearing an ornate sari. Another print from Vinay Panjwani highlights the beautiful architecture found at the Rajkumari Ratnavati Girl’s School in Salkha, India.Hope4India hopes to raise $200,000 for the cause through the sale. For context, $35,000 can reportedly set up an oxygen plant that produces 60 to 70 oxygen cylinders a day. “During these dark times, everyday citizens in India are coming together to protect each other and their communities. Here is the silver lining, the hope,” said Ganguly. “This is what we plan to highlight with this initiative: images of hope inspired by India, while raising money for necessary COVID-relief work. We believe in the power of art and photography to bring people together.” You can shop the print sale here.
Ghostbusters DESTRUCTOR T-Shirt, hoodie, tank top, sweater and long sleeve t-shirt
Beginning in April, Palestinian-Australian photographer Sarah Bahbah began releasing a series of photos on her Instagram feed. The photos were sensuous and a little gauzy—like stills from a modern soap opera, filtered through a peach-colored screen. A woman, 13 Reasons Why star Alisha Boe, and a man, romcom sensation Noah Centineo, seemed to be enmeshed in an epic romance that played out on twilit beaches, on lushly planted patios, and in frothy jacuzzis. The whole thing was clearly staged, and yet it felt intimate and raw. “I don’t feel like a woman who deserves roses right now,” read one caption; “you don’t get the Ghostbusters DESTRUCTOR T-Shirt and by the same token and luxury of knowing what I’m thinking anymore,” read another.View on InstagramThe series, titled Fool Me Twice was inspired by actual events in Bahbah’s life. Last year, her connection with a partner had come to an end after she realized that her own desires for intimacy and closeness weren’t being matched by her partner’s. “When I’m working on a series, I’m usually processing my experiences and my trauma at the same time,” she explains. She came up with the idea for the series while grieving the end of this relationship, and tapped into her newfound knowledge of attachment theory, an idea popularized by British psychologist John Bowlby, that posits that the attachment styles we form early in life influence our behavior and future relationships. “When I feel my partner withdrawing,” says Bahbah, “my anxious attachment style is activated. With Fool Me Twice, I wanted to be able to execute a story which clearly showed my experience being the anxious person.”View on InstagramBahbah’s exploration of the complex relationship between an anxious partner and an avoidant one resulted in these colorful images, with Boe’s character embodying the anxious attachment style and Centineo’s character embodying the avoidant partner. In the first image in the series, Boe’s character kisses Centineo’s through a facemask. Her guard is up, says Bahbah, but she hopes “the fleeting love in front of her grows into something deeper.” As the series progresses, he eventually makes her feel safe enough to reveal her vulnerable side. Despite their growing connection, the anxious partner faces rejection. As therapist Nedra Glover Tawwab explains in a story published in conjunction with the project on WePresent, WeTransfer’s editorial platform, the series reflects how “people with avoidant attachment … tend to keep people at a distance to keep themselves safe.”“The inner dialogue and the subtitles that appear on the photos are mostly from the anxious attached partner’s point of view,” says Bahbah. “In some cases you’ll observe that the avoidant responds, but it’s mostly Boe’s character speaking.” The dialogue, however, is intended to be subjective; “people can read it based on their own experiences,” she says.View on InstagramThe precariousness of intimacy has always been the focus of Bahbah’s work. In the short film she directed for Kygo and Tina Turner’s cover of What’s Love Got To Do With It?, actors Charles Michael Davis and Laura Harrier play a couple who appear to have a strong and playful relationship, while in reality, they lack a deep emotional connection. While she was in college, Bahbah attended a blues music festival with an old crush, and gravitated toward private scenes between individuals who attended the shows. “I was looking for very special moments between the festival goers or the musicians,” she says. One of her first series, The Wild Ones (2014) featured intimate shots of couples at different festivals. As with her previous series, photos from ‘Fool Me Twice’ are released daily for an entire month, with the mysterious elements of the project becoming more resolved by the day as the narrative arc comes into focus. (The story and series concludes this week.) In the comments section of her Instagram, many fans express how much they relate to the series. “I try to give voice to the things we think but often don’t feel comfortable enough to say,” Bahbah tells me. “People connect to the series because these are also things that they might have experienced or relate to, and they haven’t been able to give voice to what they wish they did.”The relatability of Bahbah’s work is also connected to her decision to release her photo series exclusively on Instagram—and to sell her images there as well. “I create art to tell a story and not just to make money,” she says. “If so many people connect with my art, why should I make it only available to a small percentage of people?” Last year, she gave buyers the choice to pay whatever they could afford for her prints, rather than setting a price. Remarkably, this model hasn’t affected her success. “I still get approached by galleries often, and my usual collectors also celebrate and collect my originals,” she tells me. “I haven’t seen a significant dip in who collects my art and who doesn’t.” For her latest series, she also made limited edition prints available on her website, which are currently sold out.View on InstagramWith over a million followers on Instagram, Bahbah has attracted a community of enthusiasts who express their wish to connect with her personally. “Last year, I put up a phone number on my website through which people could contact me, and developed a community via text which allowed for deeper conversations,” she says. She also stays in touch with those who reach out by sending messages to them collectively. “As much as I wish I could stay on top of all of it, I feel like I would never get anything done.”Bahbah is currently working on a coffee table book and also making plans to move to film and TV soon. “I often consider turning my series into movies,” she says. “I experience life and process new things every day, and I still have so much of my story to tell.”View on Instagram’Fool me Twice’ by Sarah Bahbah is a new photography series supported by WePresent, WeTransfer’s editorial platform.
