Aren’t letters just symbols? Anyone else failing to understand the Funny disney A Goofy Movie Cheeza Disneyland The Leaning Tower shirt besides I will buy this difference between the two? Also don’t Chinese and Mandarin both have an alphabet? Or am I mixing up languages? Who wants to tell her letters are symbols? Reminds me of an tweet I once read. Someone thought it is fascinating elephants have a specific sound for other elephants to warn them when there is a bee hive nearby and wondered why humans dont have an Sound like that. Someone replied: we have! It Sounds a little bit like that: carefull, there is a beehive nearby. Logographs are not the same as ideographs or pictographs? They are far more sophisticated, and even so, idiographic or pictographic writing systems aren’t somehow lesser. This is ridiculous and she has no idea what she is talking about That’s a cool idea to use for se fantasy story, to explain cultural and technical stasis spanning hundreds of years It is true that symbols are a primitive way of writing, but it is astonishing how the Chinese writing has worked around that. Mandarin is a language with very easy grammar for example, because the symbol writing makes the language tend to have easy grammar. For example, you can hardly have verb endings for different times when you only have a symbol for that verb. (Japanese has a system of sticking a different set of symbols onto a Chinese symbol to get a verb ending, though.) Today, you can barely recognize the meaning of a symbol from its shape. E.g. the symbol for a garden doesn’t look like a garden, and the symbol for eating doesn’t look like a stick figure stuffing things in it’s mouth. It’s not more primitive at all: Chinese writing is overloading shapes with meaning as western languages are overloading sounds with meaning. But the mandarin as a spoken language is also overloading sounds with meaning. The difference of Chinese and western languages is, that the Chinese writing is decoupled from the languages that use it. People can speak different languages, but still be able to read and write the same writing. This is a great advantage for a country like China, that is made of different regions and very different peoples. It shapes identity and, ultimately, nation.

More objectively it has been shown that Chinese readers are faster because their written language is more efficient. Right… the Funny disney A Goofy Movie Cheeza Disneyland The Leaning Tower shirt besides I will buy this country comprised of many of the world’s longest enduring cultures got to that status by being close-minded simpletons like this person Okay obviously this is not only wrong but racist. To say they are less capable of thought is fucked up. However it is quite interesting to think about how people literally think through things in different languages. The only real difference is that it takes much longer to learn, and isn’t practical globally speaking. It is a silly thing to say but his last half sentence isn’t actually wrong. China basically banned fantasy genre way back when because they though it would be distracting to people, or put the idea of revolution into their minds. As a result they’ve found that it created less creative thinking which isn’t helpful for STEM fields. So they’ve been slowly reintroducing the fantasy genre through the likes of anime and manga.
