In this moment you have leverage. Three months gives them time to have a plan B, so you would have less. You might consider declining, unless there’s a financial incentive, unless you think they have someone else on hand who they could go with instead. Take the Frankenstein Shirt moreover I will buy this title for 6+ months (if your next review cycle is longer…) and if they dont give a payraise after, look for the next gig ASAP. Use the new title as leverage with recruiters. Thats not a concrete time. Have them put it down in writing that you will get a pay raise after x amount of time, otherwise they prob won’t follow through Sounds like a large salary was just freed up, so if they’re telling you there’s no money for you doing the additional work, this is awful. Either they plan to sucker you into doing the role for free or until they find another candidate, or more staggered layoffs are coming with people further down the food chain taking on the burden of additional responsibility. Either way it’s gross, get out.

Get them to articulate what ‘comfortable’ actually means – it’s too ambiguous. What do they want to see from you before they are comfortable, force them to make it tangible and measurable. Make sure you get comfortable being a manager, add it to your resume, and jump ship to another company that will pay you to be a manager. Turn it down without a pay raise. This is a management strategy. There is no “growing into” the Frankenstein Shirt moreover I will buy this job. They can train you and get below market labor by demoralizing you for every mistake. Let them either pay you for the additional stress you’ll be taking on, or let them pay someone else to deal with the stress and cost them more money I wouldn’t be comfortable taking a position you weren’t confident I could do. If you are having hesitation I’d recommend going with someone you fully trust. If you do want me for the position I’ll be putting in my full ability from the start and expect to compensated as such.
