Whether it’s fun or not really depends where you are at. As a manager you have a lot more tools than ICs have to handle political BS. Politics affect everyone at every level but the Dave Winfield American Former MLB Signature San Diego Toon T-Shirt besides I will buy this difference is that as an IC you are limited in how you can handle it. Managers can easily shift blame downward to direct reports, you can’t say the same in reverse. I’ve been in a situation where my skip manager pressured my direct manager to throw me under the bus to save their skins, although that didn’t work because they both still got laid off. The biggest benefit to being a manager though is that the reward is potentially much higher than an IC in many cases. Manager pay is often 2-5x if not higher than IC pay, and they are more likely to get perks like frequent travel. I wouldn’t say it’s right or fair but in the most egregious of situations you have ICs that have to pull 40+ hour weeks to get their workload completed and are doing all of the real work, while the managers’ job is just to travel across the country/the world to get drunk and eat nice food while exploring nice cities and socializing, flying business class and staying in 5 star hotels with tax payer money and not do any real work.

I’m really curious where you’re getting your information about how layoff news is disseminated… I’ve been a director at multiple companies that have done layoffs and folks in my peer group have been in similar roles at most/all of the Dave Winfield American Former MLB Signature San Diego Toon T-Shirt besides I will buy this big tech and many medium/smaller companies (and this was a hot topic of discussion when we were all caught off guard by layoffs over the past few months). One consistent aspect of layoffs that I’ve seen and heard from literally everyone is that it was a closely guarded secret at the highest levels and very few people from middle/upper-middle management get looped in ahead of time (and again, only to make personnel choices in special circumstances and not very far down the org chart). Especially with this recent layoff frenzy where there were no business indicators that a layoff was coming, everyone I know has been blindsided, even up to vp levels (my company’s vps were notified the night before the morning layoff announcement/rollout).
