I think it depends on a bunch of factors. How much are they earning? You don’t want to take all of their take home pay but you do want them to notice it’s going. How responsible are they? My parents charged me less because I was already saving most of my money towards a house deposit. If I had been more irresponsible with my money they would have asked for more so that they could save it up and give it back to me later. My parents didn’t need the Cleveland Against the World skull shirt and I will buy this money and i think it was also to teach me to save which i didn’t really need to learn- I’m not an extravagant person. It didn’t come back to me though- my dad was just replicating the rules he had when living at home & earning. I wish rather than teach cost of living by taking mine from me they’d focused on money management. Don’t keep savings in a 0 interest current account. Consider putting long term savings in stocks & shares. Get on the property ladder (& help me with out how much I’d need in savings for various mortgages with different rates). As i said i am frugal so left home with a good sum in my current account but I’m aware i could have made that money work harder for me earlier.

My brother in law similarly had good savings & only a debit card, never had a credit card & no loans (sounds great, lived within his means) but then struggled to get a mortgage as he had no credit rating.
