Second time was last year and I was looking forward to it hoping to get something interesting this time and actually having to give a verdict then a couple of days before I was informed that I was no longer needed. Twice now I’ve not had to actually do anything, probably won’t get called up a third time as even twice is more than most people. Do you have access to any assisted listening devices? Eg Roger Table mics, Oticon Connect clip or Roger ON? They would help massively with hearing in court rooms and round tables with lots of people even with dodgy hearing aids. I know from personal experience that although courts say they have loop systems and infrared systems installed they are usually shite. I am deaf and have a whole whack of stuff to help me hear at a distance. Happy to give you more info if it would help. I was called up last year, had better things to do so emailed and said I couldn’t make it. They said ok that’s fine. That’s my story. I’ve done it once – absolutely hated it. I can’t go into depth for obvious reasons, but the thing that made it difficult was that the defendant seemed a bit vulnerable and I felt like he wasn’t really able to give a good account of himself. The whole process rests on the assumption that people behave in a way that makes sense, and people always make sense when they’re telling the truth, but I’m not sure I believe that. Really hoping I never get called up again. I got called up, but it was in my uni town and I had left already. Went back to pick up some stuff and hand the keys back on a Saturday, found a letter summoning me for the Monday! Had to call the court first thing Monday and explain why I couldn’t attend. They were understanding about it and excused me. Haven’t been called up since and I’m slightly disappointed by that!

I’ve done It twice now, deferred it first time I was picked as was potentially a very long fraud case and was in the middle of my degree. First case was axe vs butterfly knife fight between 2 parents outside a primary school (axe man was on trial for wounding), second case was a stabbing over a debt. First case not guilty , second case guilty. Interesting to see the process in court
Mine was incredibly boring. I was advised I was likely to sit on one of two long cases coming up – both murder cases. We found all but one guilty, for both kidnappings. The locations of people were never disputed, and later covered through cctv making the many hours of slow cctv waddling via Google maps entirely redundant. Great nap though. Nobody called me out on it despite probably being able to notice. Having said this, your fellow jurors usually are all given paper/pens for notes and a folder that you can review with necessary details in it for later on to re-read when making decisions.

I won’t go into the details, but her condition made it clear they were filmed immediately following attacks on her person. From what I could tell, social services had been involved since the baby was born, but the mum really was trying her best. There was an incident involving the baby’s safety relayed in evidence from a social worker but it really stuck with me that when asked “Well what was Mum doing then, if this was such a dangerous situation?” by the defense lawyer, the social worker replied “She was the one who phoned us. She was beside me the whole time, telling him she would do go with him and do whatever he wanted but please just give the baby to me so he could be taken somewhere warm and dry”. Broke my fucking heart honestly.
Was summoned for jury duty in Scotland (UK)….. phoned up given number in letter if I needed assistance with anything and told them I won’t be attending because of travel issues they said they would reimburse every penny I told them that’s not the Bromcic Luka Doncic x LeBron James Los Angeles Lakers shirt besides I will buy this issue but the fact that I live in South Wales (UK) they said sorry we’ll update the system and won’t bother you again Take a book, a crossword, an audiobook, your phone fully charged.
