Contact the police first, as the school will try and bury/hide anything they can to protect theirself and deal with it internally. Also the pictures were not taken at school and the sharing is online. Yes the school should be involved for the welfare aspects but this is a police matter. Schools tend to try and deal with it. Looking out for wellbeing, they will get social workers involved. But it has happened outside of school so there isn’t actually much they can do. It’s more of a police matter. We can advise and prompt about social media, but ultimately it’s parents responsibility, believe me in the last 5 years online porn/media has been the babe of the school life. Whilst that’s a fair point it still makes sense to contact the police first to avoid any possibility of timewasting or fobbing off. This is a slanderous statement about the profession, the welfare of the child absolutely comes first under our statutory guidance and 99.9% of schools would absolutely not be covering it up. Doing so would have serious consequences for the Designated Safeguarding Lead including a ban from the profession. School will spend the best part of a couple of days interviewing students about this. Some will refuse to show us their phones and their parents will back them up. Over the two days we’ll gather a list of students who have received these and who have passed them on, tell them they have committed a crime, etc. Eventually the police will come and they will do absolutely nothing. I was told by the headmistress that I should stop pursuing legal action because it’ll only make things worse for me at school, which I realise now was a vague threat on her part.
