Hope you won’t need protection, but in my experience you cannot trust employers to stick to, or “remember”, promises until they actually fulfill those promises. Ask them to please clarify what knowledge, skills, and outcomes they are expecting to see for the Beat Down Green Bay Packers Shirt and by the same token and position and what evaluations will be done to confirm that these are to their level of comfort. How will the growth be assessed? What metrics are being used to evaluate it? What’s the time scale for evaluations and feedback? What methods of communication will be used to discuss these things moving forward? How long is this “growth period” planned to last until they find a replacement if you do not meet their qualifications? I have also been kept there with enhanced responsibilities, more work and longer hours with no change in title or pay.

Be firm and clear. “I will not accept an indefinite not-so-quiet promotion.” If you feel comfortable with it you can offer them a set trial period, say a month, at which point either you’ll stay in your current role or take on the Beat Down Green Bay Packers Shirt and by the same token and promotion in full. Otherwise, only accept if you are brought up to your new role’s full title and status the day you start doing it (and don’t start doing it until you are). Again, be firm but not hostile in these assertions. Keep your tone calm and mostly level. Avoiding snarky tones and angered body and tonal language. Like a narrator who knows how to make narration sound interesting even though the topic isn’t. Get it in writing. Make them commit to a 90 day plan or something. If they won’t, you’ll have a real answer, and go ahead and say yes to get the experience and meanwhile start looking for a new job.
