I was a bit shocked by that but at that time I hadn’t experienced anything like what is being described here. What’s happening to drive this general downward shift in capability? My Kindergarten son is doing poster projects and homework every night, so it doesn’t feel like the actual content is being delayed for at least his level. Same for my 2nd grade daughter. We do a lot to supplement their education at home as we can though.

I had my first section where no one earned an A for the whole semester. I had a student with 12% and 50 absences for the semester come in and ask what he could do to pass on the last day of the semester. We’ve been lowering the bar since covid and they still can’t get over it. Our district is big on social promotion. I’m not a teacher, nor technically part of this sub. I lurk, but I rarely comment, because I homeschool and regularly feel vilified. One of the things I often get told is that I’m not qualified to teach and therefore should not. Similar to people who think self-diagnosis is entirely invalid and only a doctor can tell you anything about your body/mind, it has increasingly seemed that we (I’m 34) are told that only professionals are qualified to do the jobs for which they are specially trained and we should leave them to it. I’d also note that in our current economy, at least in the United States, a great deal of families have parents who work and either don’t have time, energy, or spoons to dedicate to teaching their kids the basics they assume are being covered in the classroom. These are among the primary reasons I have chosen to homeschool, so my kids aren’t just being passed from grade to grade without understanding the material.

Etc etc. Some people do better than others. I would be curious about where you’re located geographically. Is your particular school considered middle-class students, low income, high-end? Is your school graded with an A grade or some comparable ranking? I have two high-performing students, and I recently was shocked that my high school junior got a 100% on a paper for English that I thought was filled with grammatical problems. Things are very different now Because socially our society is falling apart at the seems, but whenever someone critiques it, they are labeled a bigot.

And as far as I can tell most people my age, even comfortable middle class adults, didn’t take any science at all! The world would be a better place if more people had any concept of how science works.

We’re also setting up our students for failure. The amount of science we have to cover now is significantly larger than it used to be…a lot of this wasn’t invented yet. We have to spend time teaching our students how to avoid fakes…fake science, fake experts, fake news.

I have to ask the hard question but can you tell a difference between the races as far as which students are struggling or does it not matter?
I will be honest I never bothered memorizing them either, because I can just multiply it in my head. It is not a big deal to multiply two numbers. It is wasted time and effort learning how to regurgitate a table rather than focus on learning how to actually do math. My 6th grade stepdaughters writing and punctuation is horrific. I’m constantly trying to help her, make her rewrite it, reminding her to capitalize, use punctuation, write in a complete sentence, and so much more. If she turns it in as is she gets a good grade still. I’m in shock, my teachers would have laughed. Not blaming the Baby Yoda Lowe’s This Is My Hallothanksmas Shirt and I love this teachers just wondering are teacher becoming more lenient because they’re getting pressured from above not to piss parents off? We’re very involved, have our kids in tutoring where needed, check homework to make sure they understand, help build foundational study skills (I personally hate that everything is online and try to have my kids write in a planner still because I feel it helps). Some natural consequences would still be nice. Like you do a shit job your grade will reflect it, maybe you’ll even get held back. Around us none of that happens.
